This scientific symposium held at Hokkaido University addressed how exposomic science holds the potential to revolutionize the study of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD). The meeting brought together leading scientists and trainees from throughout Asia and the United States to share research findings, discuss the use of computational analytics and artificial intelligence / machine learning in analyzing results of large, multi-dimensional data sets, and discuss translational interventions and policies needed to reduce the effects of the environment on ADRD. +80 attendees – Learn more
2024 USA Exposome Symposium: Children’s Health and the Exposome, January 22-24, 2024 | Nashville, TN, USA
Despite a record-breaking snowfall in mid-January that closed down much of Nashville, the USA Exposome Symposium was held seamlessly from January 22-24, 2024 in partnership with Meharry Medical College, bringing together in person more than 180 scientists, trainees, and community partners. This was the eighth exposome symposium organized by the Mount Sinai Institute for Exposomic Research since 2018, and the first convened at Meharry Medical College. +180 attendees
2023 Mexico-USA Exposome Symposium: Urban Exposome: 21st Century Solutions for Health Research, May 22-24, 2023 | National Autonomous University of Mexico, Mexico City
The first Mexico-USA Exposome Symposium was held on May 22-24, 2023 and the theme focused on the “Urban Exposome: 21st Century Solutions for Health Research.” Urban environments have unique concerns due to their higher levels of air pollution, noise, poverty rates, concentration of heat islands, and lack of green space among other reasons. The meeting provided a unique opportunity to develop new collaborations between US and Latin America-based researchers in the fields of environmental health and exposomics. Partner institutions were the Institute of Biomedical Research at the National Autonomous University of Mexico and the National Institute of Public Health of Mexico. +160 attendees
2023 USA-European Exposome Symposium, April 28-30, 2023| Brescia, Italy
This collaboration marks the sixth exposome symposium organized by the Mount Sinai Institute for Exposomic Research since 2018, and the third in partnership with the University of Brescia. The keynote presentation, “A Vision for Operationalizing Exposomics,” was delivered by Richard Woychik, PhD, Director of the United States National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. The symposium brought together leading US- and European-based researchers and trainees in the field of exposomics and environmental health to share their latest findings and insights. +100 attendees
2022 USA Exposome Symposium: Understanding the Hidden Ways Environment Drives Health, July 12-13, 2022 | New York, NY
More than 160 research scientists, clinicians and trainees came together in New York City in person on July 12-13, 2022 to learn about new tools to improve exposure data collection and other new methods in the field of exposomics. The program was also live-streamed to more than 100 people across the country. With the rapid development of new methods, novel biomarkers, and new technologies, exposomics is accelerating how we understand the complexity of environmental exposures and how the body responds to them. +260 attendees (160 in-person)
2021 USA-European Exposome Symposium: Exposomics and COVID-19, January 27-28, 2021 (virtual)
The USA-European Collaborative Exposome Symposium, held virtually on January 27-28, 2021, was convened in collaboration with the University of Brescia and the University of Utrecht. The symposium focused on the intersections of exposomics, COVID-19, and health disparities. The first day included discussions on emerging chemicals of concern, and genome-exposome methods, followed by trainee and early investigator lightning talks. The second day featured sessions on occupational medicine, viromics and COVID-19, air pollution methodologies, and sewage surveillance. The event concluded with a panel discussion on leveraging exposomics research during the global pandemic. +225 attendees
2020 NYC Exposome Symposium: Measuring the Exposome Using Novel Methods and Big Data to Improve Human Health, March 5-7, 2020 | New York City
This symposium was held over two days just before the city’s shutdown at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in New York City. The George James Annual Lectureship featured a keynote address by Dr. Linda S. Birnbaum on the evolution and future of exposomics. The agenda included presentations on precision health and the role of exposomics, emerging exposures from untargeted assays, insights into biomonitoring and mixtures, and geospatial mapping. +230 attendees
2019 Brescia: Emerging Science and Technology for Effective Prevention and Healthy Outcomes, May 20-21, 2019 | Brescia, Italy
The 2019 Exposome Symposium: “Emerging Science and Technology for Effective Prevention and Healthy Outcomes” was designed to be an introduction to exposomics and an opportunity to discuss the challenges of generating high-quality, untargeted chemical assays, as well as a discussion of how to use computer science to generate novel, exposure data, wearable devices, and other new methods in the field. The symposium presented both the strengths of including exposomics in human research and the challenges inherent to study design and bioinformatic analysis of exposomic data. +100 attendees
2018 NYC Exposome Symposium, November 2-3, 2018 | New York, NY
The inaugural exposome symposium focused on the emerging field of exposomics and how this new science is revolutionizing how we understand disease and develop new strategies for prevention and treatment. Researchers are reconstructing early environmental exposures using novel methods, big data, and new technologies to understand their impacts on health and disease. Over 180 participants from academia, government, and industry attended from more than 24 U.S. states and 10 countries, including Austria, Brazil, Canada, Finland, Greece, Israel, Japan, Thailand, and the United Kingdom.
